Oko Farms Aquaponics Farm and Education Center – Property Requirement Specifications

For over 10 years, Oko Farms has operated NYC’s largest outdoor and only publicly accessible aquaponics farm, cultivating a variety of freshwater fish and vegetables in a recirculating aquatic ecosystem. Our focus is increasing food security by promoting aquaponics as a sustainable farming method that mitigates the impact of climate change, while spreading the knowledge and skills required to practice aquaponics to children and adults of all racial and socio-economic backgrounds.

We are launching a search for our “forever home” in NYC and would love your assistance identifying potential partners and locations based on the specifications set forth below. Timing: available within the next 1-3 years, ideally beginning in March 2025 or earlier.

Tenancy: low or no-cost lease for a minimum of 5 years.

Allowed Uses: farming; education and training; food preparation and service, community gathering and events, market sales, composting etc.

Additional Specifications: public access, water and electricity access, bathrooms, ability to secure space, exclusive use of farm space.

Property Characteristics (approximately 1/2 acre)

Note: aquaponics farms can be at ground level or on a rooftop and must be outdoors in order to be sustainable
• Outdoor Farming space: approx. 15,000 sf (similar to that of the current River Street Oko Farms site)

• Outdoor gathering/ activity space: approx. [2500 sf]
• Indoor activity and kitchen space access: approx. 2500 sf, incl. space to gather 25-30 people (can be shared but must be exclusively for food use and include storage and office space)
• Vehicle Access (loading and unloading, temporary onsite parking, and address for deliveries)
